I assume the folder name is not supposed to be 0.9.2.3? You need to keep the folder name the same or it’ll get really confusing. Plus if you’ve hard wired in the folder name anywhere it’ll break.
I think it is best to keep it hosted on the WP plugins repository, that way you always know where the plugin is coming from, they handle versioning and it keeps the stats for you. Plus if the plugin becomes particularly popular then you want those stats as high as possible as people will start finding you via the ‘Most popular plugins’ link in the plugins repository. If you keep serving it on your own site then those downloads will plummet.
I had these exact same problems when I started with the Suckerfish dropdown menu plugin. It is surprisingly easy to accidentally upload two different plugins to the two different places. And keeping the stats in once place is darn handy to be honest. Previously I had been trying to patch together stats from my site and the repository.
I’ve since replaced the download link with a link to the WP plugin page.
I’ve also posted a comment asking people to post support requests and such on the boards, so far no takers, but it might pick up once I make an update (Hopefully the picasweb and flickr options tonight, code is done, just need to ensure proper implementation).
Cool. I ended up cutting comments altogether here to avoid users piling their questions into the comment box. I still get annoying people requesting support by email though. I generally refuse to answer them though, I just ask tell them they need to post in the forum for support.
