Small CSS problem

I want a solid black bar connecting the menu items and search field, but can’t seem to get it to work:

put them both in a div tag with a black background

They are already within div tags and adjusting the color did not work.. I found out why, and it’s weird.

Adding "border: 1px solid white" to #pixopoint_menu1 reveals where it is: way, way far away from the actual menu: http://findsanctuary.com/wp-content/gallery/admin-stuff/css.png?148741528&width=640&height=785%5B/url:1csymxwd%5D

Any ideas?
