Add category descriptions

Hello there, I’d love to add category descriptions to the category items. I’ve got a hard coded menu here: http://laythetable.com and I basically want to recreate it but using drop-down subcategories. Is it complicated to add the additional field? I had a look through the plugin pages but I’m not too familiar with php.
